Covering: Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham, Maidstone, Sittingbourne, Sheerness and the rest of the ME postcode area.
The local landmark: Rochester's Norman castle keep and cathedral face each other across the High Street, with the Historic Dockyard just downriver at Chatham.
Students: The Universities at Medway shared campus at Chatham Maritime hosts courses from Greenwich, Kent and Canterbury Christ Church.
On the ground: Steep Victorian terraces climb the hills above Chatham and Gillingham, with newer riverside flats at Chatham Maritime and suburban estates around Maidstone. If carrying is the hard part, Assisted from £349 brings us inside, with a two-person crew when furniture or bikes are aboard (£15 per end for 2nd or 3rd floor with no lift, £30 for 4th and up).
Who makes this move: The high-speed line to St Pancras makes this classic moving-out-of-London territory, with families taking Medway space while keeping city jobs.
While you wait for the van: Charles Dickens grew up in Chatham and set scenes from Great Expectations in and around Rochester.
