Covering: Torquay, Paignton, Brixham, Newton Abbot, Totnes, Teignmouth and the rest of the TQ postcode area.
The local landmark: The palm-lined English Riviera seafront curves around Tor Bay from Torquay harbour to the working fishing port at Brixham.
On the ground: Steep terraced streets climb from the harbours, with Victorian villas split into flats and plenty of retirement bungalows on the hills. If carrying is the hard part, Assisted from £349 brings us inside, with a two-person crew when furniture or bikes are aboard (£15 per end for 2nd or 3rd floor with no lift, £30 for 4th and up).
Who makes this move: Retirees and remote workers head for the coast while school leavers and graduates move the other way to start London careers.
While you wait for the van: Agatha Christie was born in Torquay in 1890 and set several of her mysteries along this stretch of coast.
